THE DEPARTMENT OF EXTENDED LEARNING TIME, AFTERSCHOOL, AND SERVICES (DELTAS) of the Boston Public Schools and its respective partners directly serve students in out-of-school time (OST) programs and extended services initiatives. These OST initiatives are referred to collectively as the Triumph Collaborative. The purpose of the Triumph Collaborative is to increase the capacity and quality of out-of-school time programs serving Boston Public Schools students. Through comprehensive out-of-school time services that are aligned to local learning standards, the Triumph Collaborative seeks to foster academic success and healthy development in children and youth.View a listing of the Triumph Collaborative sites.
All member initiatives and sites have the following common components:
- Sustainable, Quality Activities and Services — A system must be in place to ensure that programming is of a high quality, data-driven, and comprehensive as measured by a fixed standard. A sustainability plan must also be in place.
- Infrastructure for Coordination and Collaboration — The program must organize its effort to maximize resources and minimize redundancy. The initiative must also promote the alignment of in-school time and out-of-school time to create a coordinated and enriching day for students. This is accomplished with dedicated staff, coordinating bodies, and other systems.
- Family, Community, and School Collaborations — The program must establish a system to support family, school, and community partnerships to create a network of support for students and ensure the longevity of its activities.
- Public/Private Partnerships — The initiative must connect, support, and build upon existing out-of-school time initiatives and resources by partnering with community-based organizations, schools/school districts, and/or the private sector.
- Program Improvement and Quality (πQ) Protocol: An in-depth assessment process to measure and promote OST program activity quality.
- The Roadmap for the 21st Century: Guidance for School, Community, and Family Collaborations (Roadmap): The Roadmap is a tool that fosters continuous, self-directed quality improvement for OST initiatives the feature family, school, and community-based collaborations.
- Personal Professional Development Plans: Each Triumph Collaborative site features a full-time manager or coordinator who is chiefly responsible for implementing the critical elements of the Triumph Collaborative model. DELTAS supports these professionals through the development of an individualized professional development (PD) plan.
- Onsite Technical Assistance and Training: DELTAS supports sites by providing onsite technical assistance and training, based on articulated areas of weakness.
- Curriculum Resources: DELTAS is making available (without charge) 3 comprehensive OST curricula for Triumph Collaborative sites: Think! Fun (elementary), the Harvard Achievement Support Initiative kits (pre-K - elementary), and the Urban Ecology Institute Field Studies program (middle-high).
- Convenings: The network is convened 4 times annually, including the Science, Literacy, Arts, and Math (SLAM!) Showcase at the Museum of Science.
